"He's a nice man but he doesn't know how to dance."
Said my father to eight year old me. Cuba is a country where dance is of the highest cultural importance. There are few who know this better than Cuba's famed ballerinas.
This year, I will travel to Havana, Miami, San Francisco, London, and New York to interview the world's most gifted and passionate dancers who hail from Cuba. A captivating and controversial place, Cuba has been home to multitudes of visionary dance artists. As a professional dancer of Cuban heritage, the story is exceedingly personal to me. I aim to capture how and why ballet has flourished in Cuba and how those artists take their artistic experience in Cuba to other places throughout the world.
